Where are we?
Recently graduating with a 2:1 in Computer Games Design from the University of Staffordshire, I am now on a quest to enter the industry and create exciting experiences that people will, hopefully, be playing for decades to come.
But how do we get there?
The first bullet point on this endless list into industry is to re-learn C++ for Unreal Engine. These next 3 - 6 months will be focusing on the code behind some of my projects, old and new, in the hopes of revisiting and refactoring the code behind them. I have some gems that need development! To do that, I need to learn the fundamentals once more. I will be using GameDev.tv among other learning materials including published works by Packt. I will then be posting my tutorial work and extra development on this blog and the Crumble Games YouTube channel. After all, it was created to showcase the bitesize development indie game dev can take!
Beyond this?
Learning the skill is the first step. Applying the knowledge to my own projects will come next but this will take some time. My true estimation for industry is that I will find myself contributing towards a game in around 3 years’ time. So, ask me again in 6 months’ time what I am doing beyond the first steps and maybe I will be able to give you an answer that is more than just a pipe dream. The key to this industry is iteration within your portfolio whilst making connections. I have a portfolio, but the iteration is not there, this is where I need to improve!
